Geostatistics and Biodiversity Information in the Himalayas
GMBA workshop in collaboration with ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal, 15-16 November 2008
Inventory and assessment of biodiversity have become essential for policy-making and management strategies as well as for developing and testing scientific hypotheses. There is an increasing need for availability and accessibility of quality online mountain biodiversity databases, an initiative led by the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment of DIVERSITAS in cooperation with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The aim of the workshop is to show the benefits of geo-referenced biodiversity data, for integrated analysis and spatial visualization of biodiversity information in relation to climate, landuse, physiography and other important parameters. The work shop also brings together national partners from the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region and explores the possibilities of hosting a regional platform for mountain biodiversity information for the Hindu Kush-Himalayas. The ultimate aim would be to provide easy and open access to biodiversity information of the Himalayas via GBIF/GMBA Mountain Biodiversity Portal and the Mountain Geo-Portal of ICIMOD. These portals provide a gateway to biodiversity information with meta database, for wider dissemination and making it available to the Regional and Global Change Research community. More...
